Latest LACS Rankings For January 20, 2019

Could be last if Strike Continues into Postseason

The Los Angeles City Section has released its latest rankings. A special thanks to Coach Jean-Antione Ramirez for sharing these. If you would like to download a copy click here.

I wish I could tell you when to expect the next installment but it’s a real possibility that, if the strike that is affecting LAUSD goes on into the postseason, this could be the last ranking for the 2018-2019 season.

A Coach’s Perspective

Normally, this is where I would put the ranking list, but the current situation in the LACS is no small matter and so I decided to ask Coach Ramirez, if he could shed some light into the situation and how it’s affecting the wrestlers of the LACS

LA – Coach Ramirez, what exactly is going on right now?

JAR – The Los Angeles Unified School District and the teachers union, UTLA, have come to a no pass. The Teachers Union has been on strike for one week now and some of California’s best wrestlers are feeling the effects. During the strike, LAUSD schools are not permitted to practice nor compete. During the strike, Coaches are not allowed to have contact with their wrestlers. The battle is about class size, support staff and wages. Which most of us believe is what the students and teachers deserve. The teachers’ pay is also tied to the coaches’ stipend. This means if teachers get a raise so will the coaches. However, during this time the wrestlers are facing an obstacle that they did not see coming this season.

LA – It must be frustrating.

JAR – What is frustrating, as a coach, is that you try to create this momentum in January for the Championship run and then it all comes to a halt. Then you hear of the success other schools are having because they can compete and practice. I understand the need for the fight. I just feel bad when my senior says to me that they have been to three senior nights and now when it is their turn they do not get one.

LA – Hopefully the situation will be resolved quickly.

JAR – My hope is that my wrestlers can show some dedication and stay in shape and on weight.

It’s a very sad situation the LACS wrestlers that attend a LAUSD find themselves. Let’s hope those wrestlers do keep their eye on the prize and keep working just as hard as they were before the strike.
