Augsburg University to Add Women’s Wrestling

Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minnesota has announced it will be adding women’s wrestling starting in the 2019-2020 season. Augsburg is a private, liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It offers over 50 undergraduate and nine graduate degrees. It has a student body of nearly 3,600.

The Auggies’s inaugural head coach is Max Mejia, who he has served for three years as Women’s and Developmental Coach at the Sunkist Kids Regional Training Center in Tempe, Arizona.

I am excited and honored to be selected as the first women’s wrestling coach. Augsburg is an ideal place to begin a women’s wrestling program,” Mejia said. “First and foremost, the women will receive a quality education. The administration and I look forward to building a program with women of great character that serve as leaders in the Augsburg and wrestling communities. The tradition of excellence in wrestling has been set by the men’s team winning 13 national titles

Augsburg is an NCAA Div. III school and as such will be competing in the WCWA. If you are interested in learning more about the program, head on over to the university’s official site.

It’s great to see another NCAA program joining the world of women’s wrestling and this one is starting strong, as it has already recruited the overall number one high school in the nation Emily Shilson. As always, best of luck this upcoming season!
