21 CA U16 Wrestlers Become All-Americans at the 2019 Folkstyle Nationals

The 2019 USA Wrestling/US Marine Corps Girls Folkstyle National Tournament is currently taking place at the Cox Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Yesterday, Friday, March 23rd, the U16 division was completed after one day of competition.

Team California came in first place, in the team title race, with 348.5 points. Team Michigan followed in 2nd with 142 and Wisconsin, with 135.5 points finished in third. The top ten teams follow:

“Girls, Grappling, and Grit” – a New Documentary Coming Soon

“Girls, Grappling, and Grit” trailer

MarQ Piocos, Editor-in-Chief of Wombat Sports, has put together a documentary that covers the beginning and future of woman and girls in wrestling.

The press release states that,

“Girls, Grappling, and Grit” explores the fastest growing female sport from all angles…

…The NCAA did a study in 2017 to explore what sport has the most growth in girls’ participation among non NCAA sanctioned sports, and the result was wrestling.

2019 NAIA Women’s National Invitational Results

On March 16, the NAIA held its inaugural women’s National Invitational tournament. It was originally meant to be a two-day tournament but inclement weather gave no choice but to make it a one-day event.

Like in the WCWA, Menlo College took the team title with 230.5 points, followed in second by Oklahoma City University with 154.5 points, and in third the host school University of Jamestown came in third. The list of the top-ten teams follows:

2019 NCWA Women’s National Championships Results

Well, this is embarrassing, I almost completely missed the NCWA National Championships which took place March 15th and 16th, for the women, at the Allen Events Center in Allen Texas.

For those of you who don’t know, the NCWA holds a national tournament for collegiate wrestling clubs. They compete in folkstyle – versus the NAIA on the women’s side and the WCWA which compete in freestyle. 11 weights were contested and I’m happy to say seven California natives obtained NCWA All-American honors.

Two More Universities Adding Women’s Wrestling

Two universities have announced that they intend to add women’s wrestling as a varsity sport to their athletic offerings; Central Methodist University and Indiana Institute of Technology.

Central Methodist University

On February 12th, Central Methodist University, in Fayette, Missouri, has announced its intention to add women’s wrestling as a varsity sport for the 2019-2020 season. CMU is a private, coed, liberal arts university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It offers Masters, bachelors and Associates degrees. It has a 55-acre campus in a total undergraduate student body of around 5,400.
