The 2019 CA-USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Championships took place this past weekend. The California Grapplers came in first in each of the the three age divisions; intermediate, novice and schoolgirl. A total of 195 girls registered for the tournament, which is a 1% increase over last year’s 193. In comparison to the state tournament’s ten-year high, which was 202 in 2017, it appears girls’ age-group wrestling in the state is on a downward trend. This past weekend, at Selland Arena, in Fresno, the 2018 edition of the Kids Freestyle State Championships took place. 124 wrestlers participated in the three girl divisions that were contested in comparison to the 141 wrestlers that participated last year. And though, this is not the direction we want to see the event go in, I hope this is just an anomalous drop in the number of entries and next year’s numbers will be back on track.
Regardless of the number of wrestlers, those attending the event gave it their all in hopes of acquiring that much-prized bear. To those … Read more
A Mea Culpa
This is the first year I am posting the results from the CA-USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle State Championships. In previous years, I was simply too disorganized and inexperienced to attempt to keep track of every tournament that was taking place. Unfortunately, it has been the youngest of the wrestler-girls that I neglected.
