The 2019 CA-USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Championships took place this past weekend. The California Grapplers came in first in each of the the three age divisions; intermediate, novice and schoolgirl. A total of 195 girls registered for the tournament, which is a 1% increase over last year’s 193. In comparison to the state tournament’s ten-year high, which was 202 in 2017, it appears girls’ age-group wrestling in the state is on a downward trend. In the junior version of the Fargo Freestyle National Championships, like in the cadet edition, 28 states fielded teams. Team California, once again, bested the rest of the teams with a total of 75 team points. This time around it was not New York that took second place but Washington with 62 team points.
In individual results, Team California duplicated their All-American count, from the cadet tournament, with 19 placers out of 66 wrestlers, including one champion and two finalists.

In a national tournament where 28 states fielded teams, the cadets of team California bested the rest of the teams with a total of 79 team points. New York. the second place team was a good 17 points behind with 62.
In individual results, Team California had 19 placers out of 33 wrestlers, including one champion and three finalists.

This past weekend, at Selland Arena, in Fresno, the 2018 edition of the Kids Freestyle State Championships took place. 124 wrestlers participated in the three girl divisions that were contested in comparison to the 141 wrestlers that participated last year. And though, this is not the direction we want to see the event go in, I hope this is just an anomalous drop in the number of entries and next year’s numbers will be back on track.

Congratulations to all the California wrestlers that placed at the 2018 Women’s National Tournament which took place in Irving, Texas, a little over a week ago. California totaled 31 All-Americans, 10 champions, 7 Pan-Am Team members, 5 World Team members, and 1 potential Youth Olympic Team member.
In the junior division, four of the ten wrestler-girls qualifying for the Junior World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia (9/18-9/23) are from California! In all, California had 10 All-Americans in the junior division.
